NEA Foundation's Awards for Teaching Excellence

Together with the NEA Foundation, the Pearson Foundation continues to celebrate the nation’s best teachers through the NEA Foundation’s Awards for Teaching Excellence program.

The NEA Foundation’s annual Awards for Teaching Excellence recognize the best NEA Member Teachers. To celebrate this year's recipients of these prestigious awards, the Pearson Foundation again worked directly with nominated teachers and their students to share each teacher’s story in digital format, from the students’ point of view.

Working directly with digital arts allows students to actively and thoughtfully apply the same 21st-century learning skills that they use outside the classroom to their work at school. The student films premiered Friday, February 11, 2011, at the NEA Gala in Washington, DC.

The five teachers profiled in the student films were honored in the category of "Horace Mann Awards for Teaching Excellence" and are finalists for the national "NEA Membership Benefits Award." They are:

  • Karen Gorringe, Bluffdale Elementary School, Utah Educational Association

  • Teresa Lawrence McNeill, Walter Hines Page High School, North Carolina Association of Educators

  • Kathy Steinhoff, Jefferson Junior High School, Missouri Education Association

  • Terri Vest, Twinfield Union School in Plainfield, Vermont Education Association

  • Maryann Woods-Murphy, Northern Highlands Regional High School, New Jersey Education Association
