We Give Book’s Read for My School program is a classroom-based reading challenge that makes it easy for students to join together to secure brand new hardcover- and paperback books for their schools, simply by reading online at We Give Books.
The Read for My School campaign began in Florida and Texas in 2011, with more than 80,000 books being read online and donated to classroom and community centers across the two states. With many state legislators participating in the kick-off event, Read for My School Florida engaged readers in all 67 school districts—and in more than 550 schools—across the state. Although the Read for My School Florida campaign was originally slated to last 30 days, Florida readers completed the challenge in record time, reading more than 55,000 books in just 10 days.
In 2012, the Read for My School campaign expanded across the United States—again with record participation. In just five days, schools and communities rallied together to read 150,000 books at wegivebooks.org.
In 2013, the U.S.-based program expanded to include independent initiatives with We Give Books partners WWE and Leapfrog. Together with the non-profit organization Booktrust and the UK Department for Education, We Give Books also invited all children in Years 5 and 6 attending English primary schools to read as many books as they could over a two-month period. More than 100,000 participants took part from 3,675 schools. Together, they read more than 400,000 books. In 2014 our simple goal is to double the level of participation in Read for My School. The competition will run in the spring term of 2014 and is open to all children in Primary School, Years 3 – 6, and Secondary School, Years 7 and 8. Children will be challenged to read as many books as they can over a two-month period and may opt to submit a written piece around the power of reading
