Clubhouse profile:

Hayward is a small city in Northern California, located 15 miles south of Oakland and 30 miles north of San Jose and Silicon Valley. The Intel Computer Clubhouse there is part of Hayward’s Eden Youth & Family Center, which serves young people from among the Center’s surrounding neighborhood.

In addition to hosting an Intel Computer Clubhouse, the Eden Youth & Family Center provides child care, respite care, companion programs, tutoring, recreation programs, and a breakfast club for local young people. The Intel Computer Clubhouse provides the Center’s members with C2C programs, software certification activities, Girls’ Days, Hip Hop classes, and a variety of weekly contests and activities that encourage members’ interests in computing, the visual arts, music and rap, and web and graphic design.

The majority of the Clubhouse’s Latino and African-American members fall into two camps: Most are middle-schoolers who use the Clubhouse after school to work on their homework and explore their interests at the computer. A smaller group of teenage boys makes extensive use of the music studio.

Showcasing Members' Clubhouse Projects

Location: Eden Youth & Family Center, Hayward, California

The Activity Guide Library created for the Intel Computer Clubhouse Network was designed as a resource for Clubhouse coordinators eager to help members showcase their own Clubhouse projects. In fact, a number of Library activities make it possible for Clubhouse members to easily organize, document, and present their work to others.

For this reason, the Activity Guide Library is a good resource for members preparing to share their ideas—and their experiences—with people outside the Computer Clubhouse. Depending on their interests, members can use select Activity Guides to introduce themselves and their Clubhouse work in a brief digital film, a website, or a slideshow presentation. They can also design materials that announce their creations, including personalized CD booklets, advertisements, and posters.

At the Eden Youth & Family Center Computer Clubhouse in Hayward, California, Coordinator Rachel Paras used the Activity Guide Library in just this way. During a five-day period leading up to the Eden Youth Center’s Open House, several Clubhouse members used the Create a CD Booklet, Create a Clubhouse Poster, and Create a Music Website Activity Guides to prepare their work for community presentation.
