Clubhouse profile:

Half Moon Bay is a rural community located approximately 30 miles south of San Francisco, California. The Intel Computer Clubhouse at the Moonridge YMCA serves young people whose parents are agricultural farm workers in the immediately surrounding area.

Clubhouse members and their families live in a shared housing development established for these workers. The Intel Computer Clubhouse is located within this same development.

For this reason, young people’s attendance is relatively consistent and their levels of interest and involvement within the Clubhouse are relatively predictable: Many of the same young people make use of the Clubhouse daily, and they consider each other and the Clubhouse staff as members of a common community.

The majority of active Clubhouse members are between the ages of 9 and 13, though older members also make use of the facilities—particularly the Clubhouse’s music studio.

Introducing Theme-based Activities

Location: Moonridge YMCA Computer Clubhouse,
Half Moon Bay, California

The Activity Guide Library created for the Intel Computer Clubhouse Network was designed specifically to make it easy for Clubhouse members to apply their own interests and ideas to a variety of print and digital projects. Members establish their own themes each time they approach one of the Library’s activities, and they define for themselves the goals they wish to achieve as they complete their work.

For this reason, the Activity Guide Library is a good resource for coordinators who wish to present Clubhouse members a variety of ways in which they can approach a single theme.

At the Moonridge Computer Clubhouse in Half Moon Bay, Coordinator Mandy Clothier chose to introduce the Activity Guide Library to her Clubhouse in just this way. After briefly introducing the entire Library, she encouraged Clubhouse members to consider using any of four specific guides to explore a single theme: Music.

Clubhouse members reviewed the Create a Music Website, Create a Music Video, Create a CD Booklet, and Create a Banner Ad Activity Guides.
