The Pearson Foundation helps nonprofit organizations around the world deliver books and literacy support to communities in need. We’re sharing books we love; raising funds for literacy programs around the world; and helping the next generation of pre-school teachers give every child in America an equal chance to read, learn, and succeed.

Our literacy-focused partnerships include:

The Pearson Teacher Fellowship

Since 2001, the Jumpstart Pearson Teacher Fellowship program has now helped more than 140 talented college graduates become pre-school teachers in under-served areas across the US. Pearson Teacher Fellows receive a stipend, intensive training, mentoring from a Pearson professional, and the resources needed for school success and professional development.

Booktime

Booktime is Pearson’s UK community program, set up in partnership with independent charity Booktrust. Booktime aims to promote the pleasure of books and encourage parents and carers to read aloud with their children. Following a successful pilot early in the year, Booktime delivered 250,000 book packs to children starting school in 2006. The Booktime pack contained a free Puffin book, Hairy Maclary’s Bone, whose author generously waived all royalties in support of the program, together with a booklet for parents and carers on the value of shared reading.

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record Campaign

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record Campaign gives young children and adults the chance to come together around the United States – and around the world – to share in the joys of reading. In addition to raising money for Jumpstart, the Read for the Record Campaign gives participants the chance to see for themselves the power of this great nonprofit organization, and puts in participants’ own hands the power to help ensure that early education remains a national priority.

The World of Reading

The Pearson Foundation’s World of Reading program shares books, helps build libraries, and supports proven, scalable local literacy programs in local communities across the globe. With Pearson people and businesses and with outstanding local literacy partners – partners that include organizations such as BookAid International, Room to Read, Rally to Read – we hope to deliver books and educational resources to people who need them. By means of specific literacy programs such as the Indigenous Literacy Project and World Book Day we aim to promote literacy and reading and support local organizations similarly committed to these goals.

Family Book Nights

The Pearson Foundation’s Family Book Nights program makes it easy for community-focused venues, including preschools, Head Start programs, libraries, and Early Childhood Education development centers, to introduce the importance of early literacy to parents and families. During each event, young children and their families are invited to create their very own personalized book – one that they can keep, together with copies of best-selling books published by Pearson’s Penguin, Puffin, and Dorling Kindersley imprints, after the celebration concludes.

The Literacy Alliance

The Literacy Alliance assists corporations, associations, and nonprofits in creating book donation and other literacy-related giving programs for their employees and members at conferences, events, and online. Working with our program partners, the Pearson Foundation matches contributions to the Literacy Alliance and arranges the donation of new books to communities and schools using the reach of Pearson to identify those that are most in need of help.
